Three Major Classifications
1. Traditional Systemic Enzymes - Normally requiring a 20 to 30 tablets, capsules or caplets dosage per day for maximum effect, these original formulations from Germany, Japan and Central Europe offer a wide spectrum of proven anti-inflammation and anti-fibrosis benefits. They are most often animal derived pancreatin blends and extracts containing trypsin and chymotrypsin extracts (from pancreatin), bromelain, papain, protease, amylase and lipase that research shows can remain in the body up to 36 hours. However, it is becoming increasingly more common-place for manufacturers to replace traditional trypsin and chymotrypsin extracts with less expensive fermented proteolytic enzymes or completely omit these high-cost extracts in their formulations, all together.
2. Fermented Proteolytic Enzymes - This classification contains fermented fungal ingredients and are rapidly gaining popularity in the United States due mostly to the use of fermented serrapeptase. Derived from the microorganism known as Serratia E15 (an enzyme naturally present in the silkworm intestine), fermented serrapeptase has been clinically used in Europe and Asia for over twenty five years. Both potent and economical, serrapeptase is an excellent ingredient to enhance the effectiveness of systemic enzyme formulations as it is considerably less expensive than the trypsin and chymotrypsin extract of traditional enzymes. However, clinical tests indicate that Serrapeptase is only present 4 to 6 hours and therefore must be taken in even higher daily doses to achieve maximum benefit. Nattokinase is another popular fermented enzyme extract that is widely used as a powerful clot-buster and blood thinner. By adding the bacterium Bacillus from fermented natto, to boiled soybeans, the resulting nattokinase enzyme is produced when the bacterium begins to act upon the soybeans. Caution: Hemophilics, and individuals who have a risk of hemorrhage, and those taking prescription blood thinners such as Coumadin® or Warfarin® should not take enzyme products containing nattokinase unless under a doctors’ supervision. As taking Nattokinase could potentially cause excess bleeding and intensify prescription medications to inhibit clotting, we do not included this substance in our product.
Many manufacturers are now eagerly touting offers of new Fermented Proteolytic Enzyme products superior to Traditional Systemic Enzymes and featuring fermented serrapeptase as 'Newly Discovered Technology'. This has become an area of concern by doctors and patients alike, as it is at best, confusing advertising, and at worst, completely misleading. Fermented serrapeptase is not new and has, as references above, been clinically used in Europe and Asia for over a quarter century! While it's true that both Traditional Systemic Enzymes and Fermented Proteolyic Enzymes offer certain advantages over one another, neither is optimal alone. Traditional Systemic Enzymes have a long and clinically proven effective rate of success with a history of over 150 million patients in Europe alone spanning the last 40 years and remain in the system for up to 36 hours. On the other hand, while Fermented Proteolyic Enzymes do offer potent products at much lower costs, they unfortunately have a much shorter 'shelf-life' of only remaining in the system for 4-6 hours. The short life-span alone requires a significant daily dose to keep the product in the system and at effective levels. The high daily dose of tablets, capsules, or caplets required, has always been the one major complaint and biggest drawback to the use of either type of systemic enzymes. Patients are reluctant to ingest and quite often cannot afford the 20 to 30 count per day dose required of leading products. A doctor recommending a 20 count daily dose of an $89, 180 tablet product, incurres a cost for the patient of $9.88 per day! In just 2 months the patient pays $593!
